Abhyanga is the Ayurvedic practice of warm oil self-massage. It's not a luxury spa treatment — it's a daily ritual that Indian families have practised for thousands of years. With the right oil and 10 minutes a day, anyone can do it at home.
Why Abhyanga matters
Daily warm oil massage is one of Ayurveda's most strongly recommended practices. It supports circulation, calms the nervous system, hydrates skin, and helps relieve daily aches. Modern research increasingly supports what tradition has always known.
What you need

Step by step
Warm the oil between your palms (or in a small bowl placed in hot water). Begin at the scalp and work down, or focus directly on problem areas like knees, lower back, and shoulders. Use long strokes on long bones, circular strokes on joints. Spend 2 minutes per area.
- Knees: circular strokes, both palms, 2 minutes per knee
- Lower back: upward circular strokes, 3 minutes
- Shoulders: kneading, 2 minutes per shoulder
- Calves: long upward strokes, 2 minutes per calf
- Feet: thumb pressure on arches, 1 minute per foot
After the massage
Sit quietly for 5 minutes to let the oil absorb. Take a warm (not hot) shower. Skip soap on the freshly oiled areas if possible — let the skin keep some of the oil's benefits.
